Anglepoise Lamps

Let there be light (or some such). Anglepoise is an iconic British brand. Find out why they’re worth the cash…

When is an anglepoise NOT an Anglepoise?

Some people don’t realise Anglepoise is an actual brand, not just a generic name for a lamp which you can angle. So, when I talk about an Anglepoise, note the capital letter A on the name. Lets get to it.

Lamp-tastic…

Ever had an anglepoise lamp that just won’t stay where you put it? It’s not an Anglepoise (see what I did there). Back in the days before everyone had backlit e-readers, smartphones and tablets, you needed light to read a book. I know, it sounds awful right (and it was).

Once Upon A Time…

It was a dark foreboding evening, pitch black outside. The rain battering the windows of the small house. Nestled in a hollow, miles from the nearest living person, this was the only house Felix had ever known.

With such inclement weather, there was little to do but settle down to finish his book. Felix had been avoiding the final chapter, it was building to a final showdown between the forces of good and evil. But the question remained whether the forces of good had the fortitude to do what was necessary.

His favourtite mug next to him, hot steam rising. The comforting aroma of finely brewed tea filled the study. A roaring fireplace, and a battered but supremely comfortable chair beckoned him.

With a sigh he settled down, sinking into the chair as is it were part of him. Gently, he pulled his reading lamp towards him. Angling the lamp to bathe the pages in a soft golden light.

Just 10 pages into the book an epic battle raged in his imagination. Suddnely he heard a soft creaking noise over his shoulder. A hot sensation tingling on his cheek.

BONK!! The disobedient lamp had, once again crept from where it was positioned to tap him on the head. Why would it not stay where he put it?

It was not an Anglepoise!!!

What happened next?

Felix did what any person, pushed to breaking point would do. He threw the lamp away and bought an Anglepoise.

The moral of the story is that Anglepoise lamps do what they’re told. They stay put, and they stay put forever.

I have Anglepoise lamps scattered around my home.

As with most things on this site, they’re not cheap. But they are very much a purchase for life. Go to eBay and look at the listings for second hand Anglepoise lamps. They often go for MORE money than brand new ones. They are iconic, and sought after for a very good reason.

The design is absolutely timeless, lifting the design of any room they are placed in.

They come in a whole range of colours and finishes. The 1227 is the iconic design you’re probably thinking of, but they do a whole range of fittings and finishes to suit any room.

Spend the money on one. You really won’t regret it.
